The Title Deed in Lebanese Law

In Lebanese law, a title deed is an official document that proves a person’s ownership of a specific property and is considered the legal evidence of that ownership.

Legal Definition of a Title Deed in Lebanon

According to Article 1 of Decision No. 188 dated 15/03/1926, the Real Estate Registry is defined as:

“The collection of documents in which the description of each property is detailed, its legal status is identified, its rights and burdens are recorded, and any transfers or modifications affecting it are noted.”

Among these documents, the Ownership Book (Daftar al-Milkiyya) is one of the most prominent. It contains the property folios, where the following details of each property are recorded:

  • Description and location of the property.

  • Name(s) of the owner(s).

  • Real rights associated with the property (such as mortgage or easement).

  • Modifications or transfers affecting the ownership.
